Warner Bros. has announced the official release date for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with the DCU movie set to hit theaters on June 26, 2026. Additionally, the studio unveiled release dates for several of its other big movies, including Mortal Kombat 2, which will hit theaters on October 24, 2025.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will star Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) in the title role, with the film set to be scripted by Ana Nogueira and based on the Tom King comic series of the same name. Craig Gillespie (Cruella) is expected to direct the movie, but DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has teased that this version of Supergirl will be different. “In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl,” Gunn said. “She’s much more hardcore, she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re use to seeing.” Production will begin later this year.

The Supergirl movie will be the second theatrical installment of the new DC Universe, following in the footsteps of Gunn’s Superman movie, which will hit theaters on July 11, 2025. It has been teased that Supergirl might appear in another DC project before her solo movie.

As for Mortal Kombat 2, the sequel to the R-rated 2021 movie wrapped production in January. Simon McQuoid returns to direct from a script by Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight), with a cast which includes Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Mehcad Brooks, Joe Taslim, Hiroyuki Sanada, Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle, Ludi Lin, Tadanobu Asano, chin Han, Martyn Ford, and Karl Urban as fan-favourite character Johnny Cage. When Urban completed his work on the film, he took to social media to give a “massive thanks to our incredible crew, cast and phenomenal stunt team. Hands down the most action packed fun I’ve ever had on a film! Can’t wait for y’all to see it. Special thanks to everyone offset who helped make this time here on the Gold Coast Australia such a pleasure.

Teen Titans live-action movie in development from Supergirl writer https://www.joblo.com/teen-titans-live-action-movie/ https://www.joblo.com/teen-titans-live-action-movie/#respond Fri, 15 Mar 2024 20:48:30 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=757459 Warner Bros. is developing a live-action Teen Titans movie with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow's Ana Nogueira writing the script.

THR reports that Warner Bros. is developing a live-action Teen Titans movie and has tapped Ana Nogueira to write the script.

Nogueira is already a member of the DC Studios family, as she is the writer of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the upcoming DC movie starring Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) in the title role.

The Teen Titans were initially introduced in 1964 as a superhero team consisting of Robin, Kid Flash, and Aqualad. Over the decades, the team expanded to include characters such as Wonder Girl, Speedy, Cyborg, Raven, Starfire, Beast Boy, and more. The franchise has a large following, particularly due to the popularity of the Teen Titans Go! animated series. The animated comedy has run for eight seasons on Cartoon Network with nearly 400 episodes under their utility belts. It has also spawned several films, including Teen Titans Go! To the Movies and Teen Titans Go! vs Teen Titans.

The Teen Titans have previously made the leap to live-action, albeit on the small screen, in Titans. The first and second seasons of the series aired on DC Universe before making the leap to HBO Max for its final two seasons. This also isn’t the first time that Warner Bros. has attempted to develop a Teen Titans movie, as one was in the works seventeen years ago with Akiva Goldsman producing.

As for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the movie is said to be based on the Tom King comic series of the same name. The search for a director is still ongoing, but Gunn has teased that this version of Supergirl will be different. “She’s much more hardcore, she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re use to seeing.” Given the early casting of Milly Alcock as Supergirl, it’s possible that she might appear in James Gunn’s Superman, which is currently in production.

The filming of James Gunn’s new DC universe is underway, and there is already a buzz online as Gunn posts a close-up shot of his new Superman’s emblem. An AI-made picture was even making the rounds, which was debunked by James Gunn himself, that depicts a paparazzi shot of David Corenswet on the set of Superman in full costume, trunks and all. Long before the cameras started rolling, or even before the actors were cast, Gunn had introduced his plans for the newly revamped DC Universe, and in the Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters phase, it would include a film with Superman’s cousin from Krypton, Kara Zor-El, in Supergirl: World of Tomorrow.

Earlier this year, the casting was announced for Gunn’s Superman, known previously as Superman: Legacy, and an announcement was made for House of the Dragon‘s Milly Alcock getting the role of Kara in the upcoming Supergirl film. ScreenRant sat down with Melissa Benoist, who previously occupied the role in the CW Arrowverse, as she promotes her new project, The Girls on the Bus. Benoist was asked about her excitement about the casting, and she replied,

I think any and all takes on the character are valuable because of what she stands for. Supergirl as an entity is iconic for a reason and has been since the ’50s. I personally think that every iteration of her is valuable for young women to see, and hopefully [with] every take on her, someone will see themselves in it.”

When Gunn confirmed he had cast Alcock in the role, he posted on Instagram, “Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for #Supergirl. She embodies Kara as envisioned by @tomking_tk, @bilquis and Ana Nogueira.“ The synopsis for Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which will serve as the basis for Gunn’s film, deals with Kara enduring a wicked hangover. As she cusses her way toward sobriety, Kara becomes mixed up in a mission that pushes her powers and heart to the limit.

Gunn would explain that Alcock was his very first choice to play the Kryptonian when he said, “Milly was the FIRST person I brought up to Peter (Safran) for this role, well over a year ago, when I had only read the comics. I was watching House of the Dragon & thought she might have the edge, grace & authenticity we needed for the DCU’s Supergirl. And now here we are. Life is wild sometimes.”

Milly Alcock, Supergirl,

James Gunn didn’t take long to decide on his new Supergirl as The Wrap reports that House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock is now in talks to take on the role.

It’s expected that Supergirl will make her debut in a future DCU project, and while it’s been assumed that the project will be Superman: Legacy, it could easily be something else. Milly Alcock will then take on the leading role in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. THR adds that the movie could start shooting as early as this fall, assuming Warner Bros. is able to sign a director soon.

Milly Alcock was first reported to be up for the role earlier this month alongside Emilia Jones (Locke & Key), and Meg Donnelly (The Winchesters). Just last week, it was revealed that the list had been narrowed down to Alcock and Donnelly. Hollywood works fast… sometimes. Gunn confirmed the news on Instagram, saying “Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for #Supergirl. James Gunn is currently prepping Superman: Legacy, which is expected to start shooting in March. The film will star David Corenswet (Pearl) as Clark Kent, with Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) as Lois Lane. We’ll also see Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner, a charismatic and slightly obnoxious member of the Green Lantern Corps; Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific; Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho; María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) as The Engineer, a member of The Authority; Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) as Eve Teschmacher; and Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Jimmy Olsen. Nicholas Hoult is also set to appear as Lex Luthor, which Gunn finally confirmed last month. Superman: Legacy is slated to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

According to THR, screen tests for the role of Supergirl took place yesterday, with sources saying that the casting has been narrowed down to Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) and Meg Donnelly (The Winchesters).

DC Studios’ James Gunn and Peter Safran were said to be present for the Supergirl testing. The character is expected to be introduced in Superman: Legacy before taking the lead in her own movie, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Milly Alcock and Meg Donnelly were first mentioned as contenders for the Supergirl role two weeks ago, along with Emilia Jones (Locke & Key).

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be scripted by Ana Nogueira, based on the Tom King comic series of the same name. According to Deadline, DC Studios are preparing to begin the testing process for the role of Supergirl in the DC Universe. In the mix are Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon), Emilia Jones (Locke & Key), and Meg Donnelly (The Winchesters).

Deadline’s report states that the Supergirl testing will take place sometime in the next month, with James Gunn definitely playing a part in the process. The character is set to take the lead of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but there’s the chance she could make an appearance in another DC project, which is why the studio wants to sign an actress sooner rather than later. We all know how this process goes, so take this all with a grain of salt; while these actresses could wind up testing for the role, it could easily land in someone else’s lap.

It’s interesting to note that Meg Donnelly actually has a little experience playing Supergirl, as she voices the character in Legion of Super-Heroes and the upcoming Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be scripted by Ana Nogueira, based on the Tom King comic series of the same name. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, writer

THR reports that DC has tapped a writer for the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie. Ana Nogueira has closed a deal to pen the movie, and it’s actually the second time she’s been hired to write a Supergirl movie. Update: James Gunn took to Instagram to welcome Ana Nogueira to the DC family. “A hearty public welcome to Ana Nogueira to the DC Studios family,” Gunn wrote. “Ana is an amazing writer whose screenplay adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow is above and beyond anything I hoped it would be. We’re excited to be moving forward on this unique take on Supergirl in this beautiful, star-spanning tale.

Ana Nogueira was hired to write a Supergirl movie in 2022 that would have been a spinoff of The Flash. The project would have featured Sasha Calle in the main role, reprising the character she played in The Flash. Once James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios, that project was obviously scrapped, but they liked what Nogueira had done enough to bring her back for the new movie.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is expected to be based on the comic book mini-series of the same name written by Tom King. “Kara Zor-El has seen some epic adventures over the years, but she now finds her life without meaning or purpose. Here she is, a young woman who saw her planet destroyed and was sent to Earth to protect a baby cousin who ended up not needing her. What was it all for? Wherever she goes, people only see her through the lens of Superman’s fame,” reads the official synopsis of the comic book. “Just when Supergirl thinks she’s had enough, everything changes. An alien girl seeks her out for a vicious mission. Her world has been destroyed, and the bad guys responsible are still out there. She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost. Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head out into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core.

Superman is a guy sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, where Supergirl in this story, she is a character raised on a chunk of Krypton,” Gunn explained when the project was first announced. “She watched everybody around her perish in some terrible way, so she’s a much more jaded character.

Nogueira is a playwright and actress best known for her roles on The Vampire Diaries, The Blacklist, The Michael J. Fox Show, Hightown, and more. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be part of the first chapter of the DCU, which also includes Superman: Legacy, The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, and more.
