Agatha, release date, title

Marvel’s upcoming WandaVision spin-off starring Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness finally has an official title—for real this time—and a release date on Disney+.

The Agatha series has been through several titles over the years, including Agatha: House of Harkness, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, and Agatha: The Lying Witch with Great Wardrobe. It turns out those constant title changes were the result of the titular pesky witch, and the actual title was unveiled during Disney’s 2024 Upfront Presentation: Agatha All Along. The first two episodes of the series will debut on Disney+ on September 18th.

Agatha All Along, title

The fitting title takes its name from the viral ear-worm song featuring in WandaVision from composers Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. Admit it, you’re humming it right now. There goes my evening. In addition to Kathryn Hahn as Agatha, the Marvel series also stars Aubrey Plaza, Joe Locke, Patti LuPone, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Emma Caulfield Ford, Maria Dizzia, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Debra Jo Rupp, and Okwui Okpokwasili.

While Agatha All Along will be the next Marvel series to be released on Disney+, the presentation also gave us an idea of when to expect some of the others, including Daredevil: Born Again and Ironheart. The Daredevil series, which has experienced a fair share of delays owing to a significant creative overhaul, is expected to launch on Disney+ in March 2025. Fans have been excited to see the return of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, and the show also includes appearances from other members of the original Netflix series, including Jon Bernthal as The Punisher, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, and more.

As for Ironheart, which features Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne), Marvel didn’t announce a release date window for the series, only to confirm that it would also debut in 2025.

What do you think of Agatha All Along as the new (and hopefully final) title for the Marvel series?

For years, Awesome Art We’ve Found Around The Net has been about two things only – awesome art and the artists that create it. With that in mind, we thought why not take the first week of the month to showcase these awesome artists even more? Welcome to “Awesome Artist We’ve Found Around The Net.” In this column, we are focusing on one artist and the awesome art that they create, whether they be amateur, up and coming, or well established. The goal is to uncover these artists so even more people become familiar with them. We ask these artists a few questions to see their origins, influences, and more. If you are an awesome artist or know someone that should be featured, feel free to contact me at any time at theodorebond@joblo.com.This month we are very pleased to bring you the awesome art of…

JOBLO: What got you started as an artist?
VICTOR:
I’ve always liked drawing since I was a little kid. Drawing on walls, drawing on notebooks during class, or drawing on desks. That last one was not the most appropriate surface to draw on; especially during an exam. Even though I enjoyed drawing, I never expected to make a living as an artist. Thankfully when it came time for college, my parents suggested I take a career aptitude test. The results showed I liked art/computers and it suggested graphic design. I had no idea what graphic design was but I figured that if I could make art and make a living, then I was all for it. Over the next four years, I learned what graphic design was and how to use it. I ended up graduating with bfa in graphic design and illustration. While I was happy to have a job in graphic design, I really wanted to work in entertainment. After that I spent my evenings and weekends working on my portfolio till I was finally able to land my dream job of designing movie posters. These days I do design work in entertainment advertising and work on my own illustration artwork on the weekends.

Who were some of your favorite artists growing up?
As a kid I enjoyed reading goosebumps but what I really loved was the covers by Tim Jacobus. They were always so vibrant and colorful. I love using color in my own work so for sure an inspiration.

Another artist I liked was Chuck Jones, animator and director for Looney Tunes. I enjoyed watching Looney Tunes as a kid and drawing the characters all over my book school book covers.

The art of Mark Fredrickson on the Mead No Rules folders really captured my eye. The perspective on each one was always interesting and the color like the goosebumps covers was so vibrant.

As I grew older, I appreciated illustrators of movie posters John Alvin, Bob Peak, and Drew Struzan. The ability to show what a movie was about based off one image was inspiring.

Milton Glaser was also one of my favorites when I was in college studying graphic design. He is another artist whose use of color has inspired me.

Who do you really dig these days, follow on Instagram?
Enjoy their posters:
Oliver Barrett, Dan Schlitzkus, Vance Kelly, Marie Bergeron, Laurent Durieux

Enjoy their use of color:
Doaly, Matt Taylor, Barry Blankenship, Robert Sammelin, Jonathan Bartlett

Enjoy their Poster concepts:
Eileen Steinbach, Julien Rico Jr, Phantom City Creative, Thomas Walker

Enjoy their Illustration style:
Patrick Ballesteros, Dan Hipp, Audrey Estok, Nicky Barkla

What advice would you have for budding artists today?
Be persistent while going at your own pace. Burnout is real. Whether that’s drawing, working on your portfolio, posting to social media, you need to go at a sustainable pace. It’s something that’s helped me achieve certain goals. I may not have time to draw everyday and that’s fine. Life gets in the way. Sometimes I end up picking things up a week or three later.

What should we be looking out for from you in the future?
I recently started attending conventions as an artists alley exhibitor and it has been a great experience. It’s always exciting to talk to other people who like art, or aspire to be artists themselves. I’ve been wanting to do more horror movies and wrestling posters lately. I’m planning on focusing on those in the near future. Once I get enough done I might start attending horror and wrestling cons.

Being a fansite, we have to ask you… What are some of your favorite movies/TV shows of all time?

Elizabeth Olsen, Scarlet Witch, MCU

Like the Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Elizabeth Olsen wants to break free of the binds tying her to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She’s portrayed Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch) since 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, with little time to explore her career outside of tights, magic spells, and breaking the Sokovia Accords. Variety is the spice of life and, in some cases, what makes an actor’s journey varied and fulfilling. Speaking with The Times of London ahead of the SAG-AFTRA strike, Olsen expressed her MCU gratitude but said she’s hoping to expand her horizons beyond supervillains and thumbing through pages of the Darkhold.

“I’m trying to figure out… Because, specifically in the last four years, my output has been Marvel,” Olsen said. “I don’t want… it’s not that I don’t want to be associated as just this character. But I really feel like I need to be building other parts back up for balance. I so much want to do films right now. And I hope some of them come together in the way I feel like they can. But yeah, that’s something that I need. I just need other characters in my life. There’s no longevity in one character.”

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic and her Marvel contract kept Olsen from exploring roles outside the Scarlet Witch for years. She plays alleged axe murderer Candy Montgomery in Max’s Love and Death, a part she relishes and is eager for audiences to experience.

Talking with The White Lotus star Meghann Fahy for Variety‘s Actors on Actors series in June, Olsen admitted she’s eager to explore roles beyond her iconic MCU character. When asked if she missed playing Wanda, Olsen replied, “No, I don’t. I think it’s been almost 10 years of playing her. And I’ve loved it. And I think the reason why I am not calling Kevin Feige every day with ideas is because I’m really proud of what we were able to do. I think ‘WandaVision’ was a really surprising opportunity.”

Saying she has no idea what’s next for the Scarlet Witch or if she’ll be back in the MCU any time soon, Olsen added, “If someone were to tell me that I’m fired from Marvel movies, I will feel proud of what we made. And I really am just trying to figure out how to load up other films and characters so it becomes less about the Marvel of it all.”

Do you think Marvel has plans for the Scarlet Witch after her villainous turn in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness? Can she be redeemed? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Marvel Studios mastermind Kevin Feige says fans of Evil Dead II will be pleased with Sam Raimi's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Surprises and secrecy are parts of the playground that the Marvel Cinematic Universe partakes in when they have a wealth of actors and characters at their disposal. This is especially true when they have certain legacy characters making official introductions into upcoming studio projects. Fans have films involving the Fantastic Four and the X-Men to look forward to in the future. The film rights to The Hulk have also recently been made exclusive to the MCU, which is why Edward Norton’s 2008 MCU contribution, The Incredible Hulk, is finally made available on Disney+.

While projects like Secret Invasion and The Marvels are at the current forefront of the brand, Doctor Strange may also be appearing in some shape or form soon as Benedict Cumberbatch teased that he will be working with Marvel next year, according to Deadline. The Multiverse of Madness star recently appeared as a guest on the JW3 Speaker Series, where he teased, “There are some Marvel capers in the making next year.” And as always, the details on such claims are kept to that minimum.

There haven’t been any formal announcements on a follow-up to the last Doctor Strange film that have been made, so Cumberbatch could either be referring to a cameo, a full-on supporting role, a small appearance on a Disney+ show, or even lending his voice to an animated series like Marvel’s What If? show. Although one of the more exciting projects that can be deduced from context is Deadpool 3. The fourth-wall-breaking character brought to life on screen by Ryan Reynolds is currently underway making his entrance into the MCU with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in tow. Deadpool’s previous two films were only made in association with Marvel as 20th Century Fox had the rights, but the merc with a mouth is now set to be transported to the world of the MCU, and perhaps Doctor Strange has something to do with it.

Similarly, there is a spin-off of Wandavision with Agatha Harkness at the center coming soon, and after Strange’s possession at the end of Multiverse of Madness, it could lead to a confrontation of some sort. Again, this is all speculation. It has also been reported that Scarlett Johansson is working with Kevin Feige on a secret project with Marvel that isn’t related to her Black Widow character, so it is also entirely possible that Cumberbatch is doing something similar.

Elizabeth Olsen MCU

With a few exceptions, once you’re in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you’re tied to it for the rest of your career. You’ll have other opportunities of course, but chances are, to many, you’ll always be Captain America or the Hulk or Thor. But Elizabeth Olsen doesn’t always want to be tied to the MCU, no matter how happy she is with the work, recently saying she is ready to move on from Marvel.

Elizabeth Olsen recently told actress Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus) in a Variety Q&A that if her days in the MCU are officially over – as indicated in last year’s Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness – then she’s completely fine with that. “If someone were to tell me that I’m fired from Marvel movies, I will feel proud of what we made. And I really am just trying to figure out how to load up other films and characters so it becomes less about the Marvel of it all.” As far as other projects go, Olsen just concluded miniseries Love & Death, playing Candy Montgomery, a woman accused of murdering her husband’s lover with an axe. Yeah, you could say she’s branching out again…

Elizabeth Olsen was also asked if she missed playing Wanda Maximoff in the MCU, a character who she first played (albeit uncredited) in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. “No, I don’t.” But that’s not a slight against the work but rather a sense of accomplishment. “I think it’s been almost 10 years of playing her. And I’ve loved it. And I think the reason why I am not calling Kevin Feige every day with ideas is because I’m really proud of what we were able to do. I think WandaVision was a really surprising opportunity.” Another surprise? Eight Emmy nominations, including one for Olsen herself.

Despite what she has most recently stated, whether or not Elizabeth Olsen has officially bowed out of the MCU is anybody’s guess. Marvel president Kevin Feige has said “anything is possible” and Olsen herself seems open to returning, saying earlier this year, “Now, we can really have fun; I feel like there’s a lot more humor to be had with her. She’s often the emotion of a story, and I’m curious to see what we can explore. And hopefully [we can] give her some redemption.” OK, now we’re getting some mixed messages…

Scarlet Witch can control minds, energy and time, but can she one-up some of the most important studio executives in the movie industry? Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Scarlet Witch aka Wanda Maximoff, has detailed her advice on how prospective Marvel actors can use their debut to their advantage…Now all they have to do is land that first movie, no big deal.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Elizabeth Olsen said the tactic to solidifying yourself as a powerful force within the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes down to the contract. “I’ve had some people ask about it…Just give them one [movie]…I think that way you have more control over…If you, let’s say, ‘Oh my God, this is the most fun I’ve ever had and I love this character so much, I want to do it again,’ you now have more creative control for the next one.” Um, Elizabeth, we have Edward Norton and Terrence Howard on the phone…

Elizabeth Olsen has of course played Wanda Maximoff several times for Marvel beginning with an uncredited cameo in 2014’s Captain America: Winter Soldier before landing more prominent roles in the third Captain America, the second, third and fourth Avengers entries, and of course headlining her own series, WandaVision (playing Wanda/Scarlet Witch), even earning an Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Pretty good for being the other Olsen sister for so long…Your move, Shecky Hemsworth.

Elizabeth Olsen has been open about her Marvel contract before. While she didn’t strictly adhere to her own advice, it was far more limited than some of her counterparts at just two movies and a cameo. She also noted that, as of 2021, she had gone through three contracts with the studio. This, it turns out, has proved beneficial for her character. “It really has benefited me because they only continue to use me, not cause they have to, but because they think there’s a story that can be used….I have always felt like they had a plan for me, and never really let me in on what that plan was, but I knew that they would only use me if it was useful.”

What is your favorite Elizabeth Olsen moment within the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Are you hoping to see even more of Scarlet Witch? Let us know below!

Much like The X-Files, no one ever really stays dead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch seemingly met her end in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness when she sacrificed herself to destroy the Darkhold. But when the Scarlet Witch inevitably returns, Elizabeth Olsen told ScreenRant that she hopes she can explore the “humor” and “redemption” of the character.

We can do anything with her now! I feel like we’ve done so much,” Elizabeth Olsen said. “Now, we can really have fun; I feel like there’s a lot more humor to be had with her. She’s often the emotion of a story, and I’m curious to see what we can explore. And hopefully [we can] give her some redemption.” After spending much of WandaVision dealing with her grief over losing Vision during the events of Avengers: Infinity War, Scarlet Witch went full-villain in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While she did eventually see the error of her ways, there’s still plenty of stories that could be told.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige teased as much to Variety last year. “There really is so much more to explore,” Feige said. “We still haven’t touched on many of her core storylines from the comics. I’d work with Lizzie for another 100 years if we could. Anything’s possible in the multiverse! We’ll have to see.

Elizabeth Olsen will next be seen starring alongside Jesse Plemons in Love and Death, a seven-episode limited series that tells the true story of Candy and Pat Montgomery and Betty and Allan Gore — two churchgoing couples enjoying their small-town Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up the axe.

Inspired by the book Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs and a collection of articles from Texas Monthly (“Love & Death in Silicon Prairie,” Part I & II), Love and Death was written by David E. Kelley and directed by Lesli Linka Glatter. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly last year, Glatter said that Love and Death explores “the dark side of the American dream. Here is a young woman who gets married at 20 years old, and she’s done everything right: She has the kids, she has the family, but she has a hole in her psyche that’s a mile wide, and she makes a very bad choice on how to fill it.” Glatter continued, “[The series] looks at something that women, and I think men, went through as being products of their time. [They’re] not going to dialogue about what’s going on, but there’s a deep disconnect between the public and private person and the feeling of emptiness.” The first three episodes of Love and Death will debut on HBO Max on April 27th, followed by weekly episodes through to May 25th.

It’s no secret that the MCU has been one of the largest franchises of the past 15 years, but Marvel has been producing content lately on a scale that even they couldn’t have matched just a few years ago. The first three phases of the MCU contained 23 projects over 11 years – phase 4 alone had 17 projects that spanned barely two years, with phase 5 and phase 6 scheduled to have just as many.

The MCU has made it perfectly clear that they won’t stop mass-producing content anytime soon, nor should they since fans still flock to theaters to watch their movies and eagerly await every new show that arrives on Disney+. But with the different projects the MCU has begun to incorporate into their vast universe, the screen has gotten a little crowded, and audiences are finding it harder and harder to find the time to sit through 8-9 movies/shows a year.

As it’s scheduled, 2023 will be no different, with the MCU slated to air three new movies and six new tv shows by the time 2024 rolls around, and they’re all meant to kick off the start of Phase 5. But after the success that Marvel had with their one-hour specials last year (Werewolf By Night, Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special), it might be to their benefit to lean further into that entertainment area. After all, one-hour specials are easier for audiences to find time to watch and Werewolf by Night and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special were arguably two of the best projects to come out of Phase 4.

With that in mind, which projects is the MCU scheduled to release in 2023 that would be better served as one-hour specials rather than full-fledged movies or tv shows?

Agatha COven of Chaos, Marvel Studios, Disney+

Agatha: Coven of Chaos

With the conclusion of WandaVision back at the beginning of 2021 – the series that kicked off phase 4 – several questions were left unanswered about what would happen to some of the characters introduced during the series. Wanda’s story was wrapped up at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, audiences are still curious about what happened to the rest of the characters… and for some reason, out of all the possibilities, Agatha Harkness was chosen to get her own show.

Don’t get us wrong – Agatha was a great character, and the fate of Wanda leaving her trapped in a magical illusion was an interesting enough plot line for fans to want to revisit – but it wasn’t the most interesting one that fans were hoping for. There still hasn’t been a trace of White Vision since his disappearance. However, Paul Bettany’s Vision is rumored to return in the upcoming Disney+ series Vision Quest. Marvel has yet to confirm the Vision Quest series, though we’ll keep our eyes peeled for updates. Meanwhile, Wanda’s twin boys are still rumored to reappear at some point in the MCU’s future, and Monica Rambeau, it seems, won’t get any more screen time until The Marvels debuts later this year.

As it stands, Agatha was a very intriguing villain and played masterfully by actress Kathryn Hahn, but it seems like the MCU has bigger questions that it could have addressed. Not only that but any questions audiences might have about Agatha’s character could probably be told in a one-hour special rather than sit through an entire series. One final point is that Agatha’s ties to being a witch would have made her a perfect fit for another Halloween special.

Echo, Marvel Studios, Disney+

Echo

It hasn’t yet been revealed what the story of the Echo series is going to revolve around. Still, with the announcement of Daredevil being revived for an 18-episode season, it seems like the Echo series will lean toward an unnecessary origin story. Again, this isn’t a critique on the Echo character, as Maya Lopez was an absolute scene-stealer in the Hawkeye series, but that’s exactly why this show (if it’s going to be origin related) should really be a one-hour special instead. We already got a ton of her backstory in the show, and it was explained succinctly enough through exposition so audiences would not have to be walked through it again.

If it isn’t origin-related, fans must remember that the Hawkeye cliffhanger of Maya shooting Kingpin in the face is taken directly from the comics. It’s highly speculated that Kingpin will return as the main antagonist of the Daredevil show – which also most likely means that Echo will be making an appearance in the show. So, suppose the Daredevil series will arguably continue the events that occurred at the end of Hawkeye. In that case, it seems as though the Echo series could be another excuse to showcase Daredevil before they throw him right back into his own series.

In other words, this series feels like it will be more of a filler to potentially showcase other MCU characters rather than give Echo the storyline she truly deserves. A one-hour special would be the perfect length to help remedy that potential situation.

Conclusion

Let’s be clear – we aren’t hoping or expecting the Agatha or Echo series to be stains on the MCU’s history, and all signs point to the shows being successful additions to the Marvel lineup. After all, Agatha and Echo are now firmly established characters who gained massive popularity as side characters in prior shows, and they’ve earned themselves more screen time. However, as stated earlier, the MCU has been producing a massive amount of content lately, and it’s becoming more and more difficult to find the time to watch every show and movie they crank out.

Also, remembering that the one-hour specials from last year were considered the best projects that the MCU has produced since Endgame, then it shouldn’t be that outrageous a claim to consider taking minor established characters such as Agatha and Echo and giving audiences quick 60-minute glances into their lives, rather than take us on multiple-hour journeys every time a new popular character is introduced.

One final thing to consider with these projects is that neither has a concrete release date. They’re both scheduled for “late 2023” – which means that these shows will have to follow up projects like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3, The Marvels, Secret Invasion, as well as the second season of What If…? and Loki. In other words, they will have big footsteps to follow, and one-hour specials might make it an easier task.

Debra Jo Rupp, WandaVision, Agatha: Coven of Chaos

Debra Jo Rupp will be heading back to Westview. Deadline has reported that Debra Jo Rupp has joined the cast of Agatha: Coven of Chaos, the upcoming WandaVision spinoff series set to star Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness.

The actress played Mrs. Hart/Sharon Davis in WandaVision, and it’s expected that she will be playing the same role in Agatha: Coven of Chaos. In addition to Kathryn Hahn and Debra Jo Rupp, the cast of Agatha: Coven of Chaos includes Aubrey Plaza, Joe Locke, Ali Ahn, Maria Dizzia, Sasheer Zamata, and Patti LuPone. Debra Jo Rupp won’t be the only WandaVision alum to return for Agatha: Coven of Chaos, as it’s also expected that Emma Caulfield Ford will be reprising the role of Dottie.

Jac Schaefer, the creator, writer, and executive producer of WandaVision will be serving the same role for Agatha: Coven of Chaos, and it’s expected that she will do the same for the other WandaVision spinoff series, Vision Quest. The potential series would focus on The Vision (Paul Bettany) as he attempts to regain his memory and humanity after the events of WandaVision. It’s also been said that there’s a chance that Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) might appear in the series, but nothing has been confirmed. Agatha: Coven of Chaos is excepted to debut on Disney+ late next year.

Mrs. Hart isn’t the only role that Debra Jo Rupp will be reprising, as she’s also returning as Kitty Forman in That ’90s Show, Netflix’s upcoming spinoff of That ’70s Show. “Hello, Wisconsin!” reads the official synopsis. “It’s 1995 and Leia Forman, daughter of Eric and Donna, is visiting her grandparents for the summer where she bonds with a new generation of Point Place kids under the watchful eye of Kitty and the stern glare of Red. Sex, drugs and rock ’n roll never dies, it just changes clothes.” The series will also feature the return of Kurtwood Smith as Red Forman, who is still surrounded by dumbasses. Almost all of the other original cast members will return as guest stars for the series, including Topher Grace as Eric, Laura Prepon as Donna, Mila Kunis as Jackie, Ashton Kutcher as Michael, Wilmer Valderrama as Fez, Tommy Chong as Leo, and Don Stark as Bob. That ’90s Show will debut on Netflix on January 19th.
