NEON is here to crawl into your Tuesday and make it creepy. A new Longlegs trailer is perplexing horror fans today with a cryptic and extended look at Osgood Perkins’s bizarre-looking serial killer film. The theatrical cut of the “Dirty” and “Sweet” teasers explore two main characters of the film: FBI Agent Harker (Maika Monroe) and the serial killer, Longlegs, played by Nicolas Cage.

In the Longlegs trailer, Perkins fills the screen with disturbing imagery and perplexing prose, teasing events from a bizarre trip into the heart of darkness.

Longlegs follows FBI agent Lee Harker, “a gifted new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer. Last week, the first reactions to Longlegs hit the internet, with horror buffs crowing about the film’s unique blend of mystery and spine-tingling terror. Some said Longlegs is a “masterpiece” and one of the year’s best horror films. One audience member said, “Perkins has crafted an outstandingly bleak and fiendish investigative thriller,” then said the feature is “violently evil.”

Perkins has built a solid fanbase since his 2015 debut, The Blackcoat’s Daughter. He followed that up with the next year’s I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House before taking on Gretel & Hansel in 2020. Outside of Longlegs, Perkins – whose history with the horror genre on the big screen goes all the way back to portraying a young Norman Bates in Psycho II (if you didn’t already know, Oz is Anthony’s son) – already has his next picture lined up, with Neon (who is distributing Longlegs as well) backing Keeper. According to Deadline, Keeper “follows a couple as they escape for a romantic anniversary weekend at a secluded cabin. When Malcolm (Rossif Sutherland) suddenly returns to the city, Liz (Tatiana Maslany) finds herself isolated and in the presence of an unspeakable evil that unveils the cabin’s horrifying secrets.”

Considering how much build-up Longlegs has had – with the stream of teasers, posters and symbols – the horror film had a lot to live up to, at least how it was being marketed. Fortunately for the involved parties, Longlegs looks to be one of the horror flicks to see so far this year, with most praising it for being an unnerving work that features stellar performances and channels The Silence of the Lambs.

That’s certainly a thrilling concept and one that director Oz Perkins and his cast of Maika Monroe, Nicolas Cage and Alicia Witt have evidently done well with in a fairly economical runtime of 101 minutes. With such strong reactions for Longlegs, there’s not much to decipher in terms of whether or not fans of Perkins and horror movies are digging it.

Although multiple teaser trailers and posters have made their way online, we still don’t know a whole lot about this movie, beyond the fact that it’s scheduled to reach theatres on July 12th. Genre regular Maika Monroe, who has been seen in the likes of It Follows, The Guest, Independence Day: Resurgence, Tau, Villains, The Stranger, Watcher, and God Is a Bullet, stars as FBI Agent Lee Harker, a gifted new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer. As the case takes complex turns, unearthing evidence of the occult, Harker discovers a personal connection to the merciless killer and must race against time to stop him before he claims the lives of another innocent family.

That elusive serial killer is played by the legendary Nicolas Cage – and I’m sure a whole lot of people are going to be watching this movie just to get the chance to watch Cage play a serial killer. Also in the cast are Alicia Witt (Urban Legend, Fright Night Lights, Justified, Twin Peaks, The Exorcist) and Blair Underwood (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., L.A. Law, Dear White People, American Crime Story, Bad Hair). Who Witt and Underwood are playing, we don’t know for sure.

Cage is also producing Longlegs through his company Saturn Films, which recently had success with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and Pig. Also producing are Dan Kagan, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Dave Caplan, and Chris Ferguson. POSSESSED GEPETTO

One of the most intriguing things we’ve heard about Longlegs is a description Cage gave to genre icon John Carpenter when Document Journal had the two sit down for a conversation. Cage told Carpenter the film is “about a character who’s hearing voices. It’s kind of like a possessed Geppetto, who’s making these dolls…” at which point Carpenter cut him off to laugh and say, “I like it. Possessed Geppetto. Man, oh man.”

TEASERS AND POSTERS

The teasers and posters have given fans plenty of images and occult symbols to pore over and try to decipher, if they are so inclined. Cage may be playing a homicidal possessed Gepetto, but he’s not the only one we’ve seen committing violent acts in these previews, so there’s definitely more going on here than a simple “FBI agent tracks down a killer” story. The posters feature things like an injured nun, a bunch of covered corpses, a young girl being creeped on outsider her home, and a woman cutting her own stomach open. These posters can be seen below, along with the captions Neon sent with them.

The teaser trailer came with its own creepy message: “You’ve got the teeth of the hydra upon you.” Neon revealed the release date by telling us, “The man downstairs is coming July 12.”

Neon released a cryptic new teaser for an unnamed horror film that had the internet playing guessing games early on Friday. While the studio has yet to confirm what movie it’s for, this teaser, which played out a 9-1-1 call against a Polaroid, is likely for the Nicolas Cage thriller Longlegs. Indeed, the teaser ends with a shot of suspiciously long legs, so…

The film is directed by Oz Perkins, son of Psycho star Anthony Perkins, who previously directed the well-received chillers The Blackout’s Daughter, I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Greta and Hansel. The movie stars genre fave Maika Monroe as a young FBI agent on the trail of a serial killer with ties to the occult. Cage not only co-stars in the film but is also producing it, with Blair Underwood and Alicia Witt co-starring. When describing it to John Carpenter (of all people) he said, “it’s about a character who’s hearing voices. It’s kind of like a possessed Geppetto, who’s making these dolls…”

In addition to their indie fare, Neon has specialized in high-end arthouse horror, similar to A24, albeit with a more extreme bent. They put out both of Brandon Cronenberg’s NC-17-rated films, Possessor and Infinity Pool, as well as the recent Eileen (which is underrated), It Lives Inside, and more.

Certainly, the arrival of a new horror thriller starring Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe is something to celebrate, with this rocketing up to the top of our must-see horror movie lists for 2024. No news yet on when it will premiere, but a SXSW bow might not be out of the question. Maybe it could even be a surprise screening at Sundance, but alas, that may be wishful thinking on my part as I’m heading there in a few weeks.
