The Minions are going Marvel for Illumination‘s Despicable Me 4 by getting the Super Soldier treatment in a new trailer! It’s been roughly two years since Minions: The Rise of Gru, and younger generations are clamoring for more outlandish antics from Gru’s pill-shaped helpers with a penchant for madness. The new film introduces another addition to the chaotic-good family, with Gru and Lucy welcoming a son. He’s a mama’s boy through and through, but that won’t keep Gru from vying for his love and adoration. 

Despicable Me 4 finds Steve Carell reprising his role as the reformed villain Gru. Throughout the Despicable Me series of films, Gru has left a life of villainy behind in favor of becoming a father, husband, and secret agent. Of course, Gru’s hapless yet helpful helpers, the Minions, will also return in the sequel. Kristen Wiig, Pierre Coffin, Miranda Cosgrove, and Steve Coogan are also returning. Chris Renaud (Despicable Me 1 and 2, The Lorax, The Secret Lives of Pets 1 and 2) is directing Despicable Me 4, with animation director Patrick Delage (Sing, Sing 2) co-directing.

In the Despicable Me 4 trailer, Gru’s been compromised, and a villain named Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) is on the loose! Together with his companion Valentina (Sofia Vergara), Maxim unleashes hell on San Francisco using titanic robots and the latest tools of his evil trade. To help Gru, Lucy, and the family from landing in hot water, five Minions “volunteer” to launch a rescue mission. To prepare for the battle, the Minions go full Steve Rogers to gain superpowers. As the Minions learn to use their new gifts, anything and everything goes wrong because it’s the Minions. What did you expect?

I can’t help but enjoy the Despicable Me franchise. I know the Minions are old hat for some of us (especially for parents), but there’s excellent humor and slick animation with every film in the series. I enjoy Gru. I love Lucy and can never get enough of the troublesome trio: Poppy, Agnes, and Margo. Despicable Me 4 looks like a total blast, and it’s coming to theaters on July 3, 2024!

Suppose you’re like me and are both terrified and fascinated by the rise of AI. In that case, you might get a chuckle out of Universal and Illumination’s surprisingly cleaver Big Game spot for Despicable Me 4. Set to play before the National Anthem, the spot, which the great Jon Hamm narrates, tries to explain the secret behind AI, which, naturally, is revealed to be small, yellow and annoying – being the Minions (who else?). While I tapped out of the Despicable Me franchise a while ago, I must admit that this commercial was surprisingly clever (and timely), so who knows, maybe Despicable Me 4 will be a lot better than we think it will be. The full trailer for this one dropped a few weeks ago (watch it here), and the movie is set for a July 3rd release. Universal has called it the “first Despicable Me movie in seven years,” which is only half true, as Steve Carrell reprised his role in Minions: The Rise of Gru two years ago. $940 million. That’s how much money the last Despicable Me film, Minions: The Rise of Gru, made at the worldwide box office. People love this series, so it’s no wonder that Universal and Illumination have made sure not to let their cash cow lay dormant for too long. Spanning two franchises, the characters are back for Despicable Me 4, which has just gotten a new trailer. 

In it, Steve Carell’s Gru is now a family man and the former super-villain is now an agent in the Anti-Villain League while raising his growing brood (with some help from his Minions). The trailer is about what you’d expect from the series, with perhaps the most cliche needle drop of all time, Guns n’ Roses’ “Sweet Child of Mine”, used in the intro. Once again, Carell is joined by Kristen Wiig, who voices Gru’s wife, Lucy, and this time, some of his big-screen pals are joining in on the fun. Will Ferrell voices the movie’s new bad guy, Maxime Le Mal, while Carell’s old Daily Show crony (and partner in the Ambiguously Gay Duo from SNL) Stephen Colbert is also in the cast, opposite Sofia Vergara (currently getting raves in Griselda), Joey King, Chloe Fineman, and – natch – Pierre Coffin, the voice of the Minions.

Illumination and Universal have set dates for two of its forthcoming animated features, Despicable Me 4 and Migration. Gru and the Minions will return to theaters for Despicable Me 4 on July 23, 2024. Meanwhile, Migration is set to fly on June 30, 2023, the same weekend as the fifth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise.

Migration is an original animated feature that follows a family of ducks who convince their over-protective father to go on the vacation of a lifetime as they attempt to migrate from New England, through New York City, and down to the Bahamas. Benjamin Renner (Ernest et Célestine) will direct from a script penned by Mike White (School of Rock, The White Lotus). Illumination founder Chris Meledandri produces.

It won’t be long before Gru, his girls, Lucy, and the Minions are back in the public consciousness. If this sounds like a threat, you might want to switch to decaf. The Despicable Me franchise has brought a lot of smiles to families all across the globe, and it’s sure to do so again when Gru and the Minions return to theaters!
