The co-writer of the Rebel Moon movies says Part Two is going to be a nonstop action rollercoaster ride of twists and turns

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver might have debuted at #1 on the English Films List for Netflix’s Top 10 with 21.4 million views, but it wasn’t enough to top the original or stand against other films on the popular streaming service. When Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire debuted in December, the Star Wars-like action film gained 23.9 million views during its opening window. While the gap between both films isn’t staggering, one has to wonder why more people failed to tune in for the continuation of Snyder’s story.

While I would say the promotional lead-up to Rebel Moon 2 felt weaker than the first, others could beg to differ. Regardless of the sequel’s opening salvo, 5.5 million viewers returned to Rebel Moon—Part One: A Child of Fire to familiarize themselves with the original before watching the sequel. Snyder has now had three consecutive #1 films on Netflix: Rebel Moon Parts One & Two and Army of the Dead.

With his loyal fanbase, you’d think that Snyder would blow past the competition unchallenged, though it appears that Netflix subscribers enjoy various film genres. Previously, the Sam Esmail-directed thriller Leave the World Behind debuted with 41.7 million views. Millie Bobby Brown’s fantasy action film Damsel topped the Netflix chart in March with 35 million views during its opening weekend, climbing to 126 million in 44 days.

The upside is Zack Snyder’s films tend to have a long tail, with fans tuning in multiple times to enjoy the filmmaker’s output, often gathering friends for viewing parties or creative drinking games. Elsewhere, the live-action/animated crossover Woody the Woodpecker Goes to Camp flew into the #2 spot with 18.8M views, followed by the true crime documentary What Jennifer Did at #3 (16.3M views). Millie Bobby Brown’s Damsel slayed the competition again to take #9 (2.5M views). The fan-favorite fantasy has reached 126M views in 44 days.

According to Netflix‘s official press release:

Baby Reindeer, the limited series by creator and star Richard Gadd, has risen to the top of the English TV list with 13.3M views. List mainstays included 3 Body Problem, which spent its fifth week on the list in third place (3.2M views), and Guy Ritchie’s aristocratic gangster series The Gentlemen, which spent its seventh week on the list in sixth place (2.9M views). Making their list debuts were the Cate Blanchett-narrated nature docuseries Our Living World in fourth place (3.2M views), stand-up special Jimmy Carr: Natural Born Killer in eighth (2.3M views), and Season 6 of the reality competition series The Circle in ninth place (2M views).

Are you surprised that fewer people tuned in to Rebel Moon—Part Two: The Scargiver during the sequel’s weekend debut? Have you watched the movie yet? Can you believe Snyder plans to make four to six movies in the Rebel Moon series? Let us know in the comments section below.

Zack Snyder may not have been able to bring Justice League 2 to life, but he was able to repurpose a scene for Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver

Rebel Moon 2 includes a “Last Supper” scene in which Kora (Sofia Boutella) and the other rebels trade war stories while awaiting the final battle against Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein). Snyder told THR that this scene was originally included in his Justice League sequel. “There absolutely is a Last Supper in Justice League 2, and the scene had them telling the stories of how they got there, because Justice League 2 was going to open with us now 10 years in the future. ‘How did we get here?’” Snyder explained. “So that was kind of it, and yes, [Rebel Moon — Part Two’s sequence] has a similar sort of structure to the Justice League 2 scene that we have.

Snyder added that he used a “fair number” of his Justice League 2 ideas for Rebel Moon, “but certainly not enough to make a Justice League 2 movie not viable.

Although both parts of Rebel Moon are now streaming on Netflix, there’s still more on the way. In addition to the upcoming R-rated director’s cuts, Snyder has also confirmed that they’re working on Rebel Moon 3, and the entire franchise could span somewhere between 4 or 6 movies. “We absolutely have the story (for Rebel Moon 3) all set, we did all that work. We wrote a treatment for the movie so we’ll see how we go ahead,” Snyder said. “I guess (a total of) 4 makes sense. 4 or 6 movies, depending… I guess it’s whether or not every time we make one of these movies we make two, that’s the question. We were talking about it the other day and I was like, would an audience be disappointed if they only got one movie now from Rebel Moon? Would they be like, ‘Oh, it’s one now? Great.’

Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver will continue “the epic saga of Kora and the surviving warriors as they prepare to sacrifice everything, fighting alongside the brave people of Veldt, to defend a once peaceful village, a newfound homeland for those who have lost their own in the fight against the Motherworld. On the eve of their battle the warriors must face the truths of their own pasts, each revealing why they fight. As the full force of the Realm bears down on the burgeoning rebellion, unbreakable bonds are forged, heroes emerge, and legends are made.

Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver is now streaming on Netflix, so be sure to check out a review from our own Chris Bumbray right here.

PLOT: Kora (Sofia Boutella) and the rebels she recruited prepare to battle with the full force of Atticus Noble’s (Ed Skrein) Imperium.

REVIEW: I took a bit of heat for my positive review of Rebel Moon Part One a few months ago, but I make no apologies for the fact that I found it an immersive, entertaining epic. I liked it a lot more than the last few Star Wars movies (particularly The Rise of Skywalker). So, I was eager to see the story reach its conclusion with Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver. While an entertaining, action-packed end to the saga, it’s also a clear-cut case of why Snyder’s longer director’s cuts should have been the only ones hitting Netflix. Even more than in the first film, this feels awkwardly fast-paced and anti-climactic at times due to the story having no room to breathe.

Indeed, many of the more intriguing plot points hinted at in the first film, such as the robot Jimmy’s resistance to the Motherworld, are only given a half-baked examination here. Rather, the film plunges you right back into the action without taking much time to breathe. It’s also worth noting that Snyder’s Seven Samurai/ Magnificent Seven inspirations are even more on the nose here, with whole sequences seeming lifted out of those movies, especially as our rebel heroes make themselves known on The Veldt.

Rebel Moon 2

In my interview with Snyder, he mentioned that each director’s cut runs an hour longer, meaning you’re essentially getting a new film tacked on, and I have no doubt the longer cuts of the films will work better. Especially in this case, you feel like you’re watching a tease for a much better, longer movie.

That said, a lot of it still worked for me on a basic level, with Sofia Boutella again an action heroine you can root for as the self-sacrificing, haunted Kora, whose past transgressions make her a more tortured heroine this time. The burgeoning romance between her and Michiel Huisman’s Gunnar comes to a fitting conclusion, with him emerging as one of the most heroic of the rebels, even if he’s not really a warrior on par with any of them. Dijmon Hounsou finally gets his due, with Titus’s backstory filled out, and he more-or-less emerges as the second lead. Yet, some of the other rebels, particularly Staz Nair’s Tarak, are given little to do, with it feeling like the movie is overstuffed with plot lines. Of everyone, only Boutella, Huisman, Hounsou and Doona Bae’s Nemesis are allowed to make much of an impact.

As the returning villain, Ed Skrein plays Noble a bit differently this time, with him somewhat more desperate and humbled since his defeat in the first film. This is a nice added layer for a baddie who initially came off as two-dimensional. Again, though, we needed a lot more time with the forces of the Motherworld, particularly Fra Fee’s Belisarius, who only gets one big scene to show off his menacing side.

As far as the action goes, this is very much in the vein expected from a Zack Snyder epic, with tons of slow motion and self-sacrifice. Some may find this cheesy, but if you jump into this expecting anything else, you must not really know what Snyder’s all about, so why bother?

While I enjoyed Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver overall, I’ll admit that, taken together, the movies feel like a tease for something bigger and better. No doubt, the director’s cuts will be the true judge of whether or not the franchise has worked for Snyder and Netflix. If you felt the first part of the movie felt compromised, this won’t feel any more complete. As much as I had a decent time watching the two movies, it’s maybe not the worst idea to wait for the director’s cuts to come out this summer and watch the full, proper version of these movies.

Rebel Moon

Following a limited theatrical release, director Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire (read our review HERE) was released through the Netflix streaming service back in December. Viewers will get the chance to find out what happens in the second half of the story when Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver reaches the service this Friday – and while doing press for that film, Snyder confirmed that a Rebel Moon 3 is already in the works. But he doesn’t intend to wrap this franchise up as a trilogy. In the end, he thinks there could be a total of 4 to 6 Rebel Moon movies!

Speaking with Radio Times, “We absolutely have the story (for Rebel Moon 3) all set, we did all that work. We wrote a treatment for the movie so we’ll see how we go ahead. … I guess (a total of) 4 makes sense. Great.’

As you can tell from all this sequel talk in his interviews, Snyder has always been open about the fact that he’s hoping “a massive IP and a universe that can be built out” from the foundation of Rebel Moon. He crafted the story for Rebel Moon with 300 co-writer Kurt Johnstad, and the pair wrote the screenplay with Army of the Dead co-writer Shay Hatten. The events of the two films, which draw inspiration from Seven Samurai, are set in motion when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate, the colonists dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.

Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver continues the epic saga of Kora and the surviving warriors as they prepare to sacrifice everything, fighting alongside the brave people of Veldt to defend a once peaceful village, a newfound homeland for those who have lost their own in the fight against the Motherworld. On the eve of their battle, the warriors must face the truths of their pasts, each revealing why they fight. As the full force of the Realm bears down on the burgeoning rebellion, unbreakable bonds are forged, heroes emerge, and legends are made. Snyder has previously described this one as “a war movie“.

The films star Sofia Boutella (The Mummy), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Djimon Hounsou (A Quiet Place Part II), Ray Fisher (Justice League), Doona Bae (The Host), Jena Malone (Sucker Punch), Staz Nair (Supergirl), E. Duffy (whose previous credits are all short films), Charlotte Maggi (MaveriX), Sky Yang (Tomb Raider), Michiel Huisman (Game of Thrones), Alfonso Herrera (Ozark), Cary Elwes (Saw), Corey Stoll (Ant-Man), Ed Skrein (Deadpool), Anthony Hopkins (Hannibal), and Stuart Martin (Army of Thieves).

While we wait to see if there are going to be more movies (and if so, how many there will be), the Rebel Moon franchise is already being expanded with comic book tie-ins, Snyder has mentioned a spin-off idea, and there’s an animated series in development.

Would you like to see 4 to 6 Rebel Moon movies? Do you think they should continue making two at a time? Share your thoughts on this franchise by leaving a comment below.

Fans of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire are counting the days until the release of Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver, touching down on April 19, 2024. And now, just over a month before the film makes its Netflix debut, the streamer released a new one-sheet showing the movie’s heroes in action:

Rebel Moon Part Two

The movie’s full trailer is set to debut tomorrow. Earlier this week, Empire released a new image of Sofia Boutella’s Kora primed and ready for action to get people excited about the follow-up to Snyder’s Star Wars-like sci-fi action spectacle. In the new image, Kora swings into an explosive firefight with guns blazing. Behind her, there looks to be tendrils of some kind emitting a glowing blue light. Is it possible Rebel Moon 2 has some Matrix vibes to go with its sinister Star Wars motif?

Rebel Moon 2, Sofia Boutella, image

“It’s a war film, 100 per cent,” Snyder told Empire about the anticipated sequel. “It’s got way more action than the first movie, very intense and crazy action.” In addition to off-the-wall action sequences, Snyder says plenty of character drama and emotional beats bring the cast closer together. “It’s absolutely an emotional rollercoaster you’re going to be on with these cats,” Snyder promises. “We discover the backstories of our heroes, and there is an interesting correlation between what’s happened to most of them to make this battle cathartic and symbolic.”

Boutella appears differently in the sequel, with a fresh haircut to keep things high and tight. Snyder says the new ‘do informs aspects of her journey and where fans can expect her to go next. “She’s shielding us from her real involvement, and there’s a bit of conflict around what she’s done,” Snyder says while feeding us breadcrumbs about the plot. “But in the end, what she offers the group, her skill set, and her desire to redeem herself makes her a powerful asset.”

While Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver is rated PG-13, an R-rated Snyder Cut of the first film arrives this summer. The Snyder Cut of Rebel Moon is an hour longer than the film’s original version. Snyder says the idea was always that there would be a second version. He maintains that this never happened on his previous director’s cuts. “All my other director’s cuts are me just reacting to the studio like getting noted and then freaking out and then running to home video to save me.”

What do you think of the new Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver poster? Are you excited for the second chapter of Zack Snyder’s sci-fi epic? Let us know in the comments section below.

Zack Snyder, Rebel Moon, backlash

Zack Snyder doesn’t seem like the type of guy who is overly concerned with reviews, but audiences did take notice when the much-anticipated Rebel Moon received the worst reviews of Snyder’s career (our own Chris Bumbray did enjoy it). With the release of Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver just a month away, Snyder responded to the backlash, admitting that his movies tend to be polarizing.

I don’t really have a rebuttal to the reviews,” Snyder told Empire. “For whatever reason, the reaction to my movies is very polarising, and it always has been. The movie, it doesn’t seem like there’s that much in it that would warrant such visceral responses.

Following the release of The Scargiver, Snyder will be releasing R-rated director’s cuts of both movies, which will include “all the gore and the hard R-ness and the nudity and the violence and crazy shit.” He added that he’ll be interested to see what the critics say about the director’s cuts because they’re a “different kettle of fish.” We still don’t know exactly when they will be released, but Snyder recently said that they will likely drop this summer on the same day, encompassing six hours total.

Here’s the official logline for Rebel Moon: “When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.

Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire is streaming on Netflix and will be followed by Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver on April 19th.

Rebel Moon, R-rated, director's cut

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver will debut on Netflix next month, but fans have been anxiously awaiting the R-rated director’s cuts of both movies, which are shaping up to be something epic.

In a new interview with I Minutemen (via The Playlist), Snyder revealed that the R-rated Rebel Moon director’s cuts will likely be released on the same day later this summer, although he cautioned that nothing is official. “Those will come out, probably, on the same day – later,” Snyder said. “We don’t have a date yet, but I think it’s going to be in the summer.

Snyder continued, “They’re each about an hour longer than the originals, the PG-13 [versions]. So it’ll be nice to see the six hours together. You can take a break, of course. It’s a more, maybe, immersive experience. I’m interested for people to see it that way. It’s very adult, it’s very R-rated.” Six hours of Rebel Moon might be quite the marathon for some folks, but I’m sure plenty of Snyder fans out there are more than eager to devour it all in one sitting.
