Kevin Costner, physical media, DVD

We’re big champions of physical media here at JoBlo, and despite ongoing claims that it will soon be going the way of the Dodo, we’ve yet to see its demise. Kevin Costner is also a big fan of physical media, and when asked by Deadline about the supposed “death of the DVD,” he was quick to jump to its defence.

Death of the what? DVD is not dead, at all,” Kevin Costner said. “That’s what they’d have you believe. Maybe it’s not making the same amount of money, but just try to go ask for that from the studio. They won’t give that up. A lot of people that like my movies, they can’t get to a theater, and they’re waiting for that moment. You can’t make your film for the opening weekend. You have to make it for its life.

While it’s true that studios haven’t been putting the same importance on physical media as they once did, it’s been great to see boutique labels pick up the slack over the years. Lesser-known movies from around the globe have been given the prestige treatment, and I’ve certainly discovered many new favourites thanks to Criterion, Arrow Video, Kino Lorber, Vinegar Syndrome, Shout/Scream Factory, and more. Additionally, fans are growing tired of content purges on streaming services, which could be leading to a physical media comeback.

Kevin Costner’s next project is Horizon: An American Saga, which will span two parts (and perhaps more). In addition to directing and starring in the two-film saga, Costner also produced the project and co-wrote the script alongside Jon Baird. “In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat, and tears of many,” reads the official synopsis. “Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Kevin Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends, and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.” Despite the project playing a role in his departure from Yellowstone, I think a lot of fans are very excited about this one.

Horizon also boasts quite the epic ensemble cast, which includes (take a deep breath here) Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Jena Malone, Danny Huston, Michael Rooker, Will Patton, Owen Crow Shoe, Tatanka Means, Ella Hunt, Tim Guinee, Colin Cunningham, Scott Haze, Tom Payne, Abbey Lee, Georgia MacPhail, Douglas Smith, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jamie Campbell Bower, Alejandro Edda, Wasé Winyan Chief, Michael Anganaro, Angus Macfadyen, Jon Beavers, Alex Nibley, Kathleen Quinlan, Etienne Kellici, Amos Jason Charging Cloud, Bodhi Okuma Linton, Gregory Cruz, James Russo, Jeff Fahey, David O’Hara, Chris Conner, Leroy M. Silva, Bernardo Velasco, Tom Everett, Glynn Turman, and more. Phew.

The first part of Horizon: An America Saga will be released in theaters on June 28th, followed by the second part on August 16th. Maybe we’ll even get one of Costner’s famous director’s commentaries for the Blu-ray release.

Kevin Costner’s passion project will be a two-part summer release this year. The actor has returned to the director’s seat for the first time in over twenty years for Horizon: An American Saga, which is set to be told in two chapters. Costner began work on this story in 1988 and he has more movies planned. The main character that he invented for this film in 1988 was so important to him that he even named his son, Hayes, after him. He hopes the movies can be a big franchise and that years from now, people can binge-watch hours of Horizon in theaters.

Costner, who is not known to be a franchise actor, is planning to do what most Hollywood tentpole movies aim for — go for that summer movie release date. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 will be riding into theaters this June, and in a recent report from Deadline running down the list of movies being set to release this year (which is unusually thin due to the Hollywood strikes from last fall), it is revealed that Costner’s western will be clocking in at three hours long. The Yellowstone star is no stranger to long films. His famous Oscar-winning period film Dances With Wolves, a movie he also directed, also sported a length of just over three hours. Costner would also return to the Western epic in 1994’s Wyatt Earp, which ran a three-hour and eleven-minute runtime. He also directed and starred in The Postman in 1997. That film is a post-apocalyptic film that has a Western-like tone and nearly crossed the three-hour mark.

Horizon‘s commercial appeal makes it a dark horse contender of the summer. The trailer was an old-fashioned presentation that is played straight-forward without any modern flash or visual flair. It almost seemed out of time with a “they don’t make ’em like this anymore” vibe. After the news of its runtime, it could possibly have an uphill battle sustaining the patience of summer moviegoers. However, the argument could have been made for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which was also a three-hour, character-driven historical drama, but it would be a pure dialogue-driven film, whereas Horizon has the benefit of action sequences that can ease the pacing for an audience. Additionally, Costner has chosen to release Chapter 2 only a couple months later in August, which is a move that’s unheard of these days. Indeed, the films are a major gamble but, given Costner’s enduring popularity, they might post surprisingly high grosses when all is said and done.

Hold onto your horses, folks! Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga is riding into CinemaCon 2024 to share the latest about the Yellowstone and Dances With Wolves star’s Western epic. On Monday, we learned the first part of Horizon: An American Saga, which will debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19. Still, attendees moseying into CinemaCon got a new look at the sprawling drama of how settlers won the West.

During the Warner Bros. panel, Costner addressed the CinemaCon crowd, saying the movie is a bit about the promise of America. The idea was that if you were mean enough, tough enough, you could take what you wanted, but in the process, you stepped on people who had been here for 1000 years. But the film does not pass judgment, and that story, to him, was drama.

Speaking about making the movie, Costner said he likes “Journey” movies. He doesn’t like “plot movies” and prefers to take the ride. The movie covers a period of 12 years, from before the Civil War to during it (but it’s not about the Civil War). He notes that the West didn’t last long. It was over when the war ended.

Costner began work on Horizon in 1988. He has more movies planned, and the character he invented in 1988 was so important to him that he named his son after him (Hayes). His character is about a drifter who wants to find a home. He hopes the movies can be a big franchise and that years from now, people can binge-watch hours of Horizon in theaters.

Costner then screened an extended look at Horizon: An American Saga Part 1 and Part 2. Our editor-in-chief, Chris Bumbray, says Horizon truly looks like an epic. The footage he saw makes the movie look like an old-fashioned adventure. Still, it’s nuanced and acknowledges the danger of settling the West, the conflicts between the weak and the strong, the homesteaders and Native Americans, and more. The films highlight how many settlers left their families to join the war, leaving them to fend for themselves. The focus is on two stories. One is Costner, who is a drifter who takes in a prostitute (Abbey Lee) and her baby, while Sienna Miller and Sam Worthington are settlers separated by the war.

In addition to directing and starring in the two-film saga, Kevin Costner also produced the project and co-wrote the script alongside Jon Baird.

Horizon: An American Saga, Kevin Costner, Cannes

Kevin Costner has stepped behind the camera for the first time in over twenty years for Horizon: An American Saga, a Western epic that looks… well, epic. It was announced today that Horizon will debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19th, with Costner and the cast in attendance.

I’d like to thank the Festival de Cannes for including my film Horizon, An American Saga in this year’s selection,” Costner said in a statement. “It’s been 20 years since I’ve had the pleasure of being on the Croisette. I’ve been waiting for the right time to return and I’m proud to say that this time has come. Horizon, An American Saga is a story that began 35 years ago, and I can’t think of a better place than Cannes to reveal to the world the result of such a wonderful adventure. The French have always supported films and believed deeply in filmmaking. Just as I believe deeply in my film.

In addition to directing and starring in the two-film saga, Kevin Costner also produced the project and co-wrote the script alongside Jon Baird. “In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Sorting through America’s history is a Herculean task. Humans built the nation with blood, sweat, and tears, watering the soil with memory, pain, and perseverance. Today, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga trailer explores the settlement of America’s Western frontier from the Indigenous groups who blessed the land to those who occupied it by force. Horizon will be Kevin Costner‘s first time directing a movie since Open Range in 2003. He also busted out his directing chops for The Postman and Dances with Wolves, the latter of which earned him an Academy Award for Best Director.

Kevin Costner’s Horizon will “span 15 years in the settlement of America’s Western frontier, and focus on both the settlers as well as the Indigenous groups that first occupied the land.”

Here’s the official synopsis for Horizon: An American Saga courtesy of Warner Bros.:

“In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat, and tears of many.  Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Kevin Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends, and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.”

In today’s Horizon: An American Saga trailer, families get torn apart as hostile forces invade the West, hoping to lay claim to the land. With a vendetta to honor, traditions to save, and lives on the line, each group goes to war for freedom, territory, and peace.

Notably, Costner’s involvement with Horizon may have played a role in his premature departure from Yellowstone: Season 6.

Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 and Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 2 will open in theaters on June 28, 2024, and August 16, 2024.

“It’s a really beautiful story; it’s a hard story,” Costner told Variety about An American Saga in 2022. “It really involves a lot of women, to be honest. There are a lot of men in it, too, but the women are really strong in ‘Horizon.’ It’s just them trying to get by every day in a world that was impossibly tough. They were often [dragged] out to these places because that’s where the men wanted to go; women were following their men. They didn’t ask to be in these territories that were unsettled and dangerous, and life wasn’t easy. I’ve chosen to make sure that was really obvious, that that wasn’t easy, and how vulnerable people were.”

Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 and Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 2 will open in theaters on June 28, 2024, and August 16, 2024.

Dune 2 Rebel Moon

Some of the biggest and most anticipated movies of 2023 and 2024 have already secured their MPAA ratings. The Motion Picture Association of America recently published their ratings for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Rebel Moon, with both movies due out at Christmas. But, surprisingly, two films that are a long way off, Dune: Part Two and Kevin Costner’s western epic Horizon, have already been given ratings, making it seem as if both films are locked and ready to go.

Here are the ratings:

Rebel Moon – Rated PG-13 for sequences of strong violence, sexual assault, bloody images, language, sexual material and partial nudity.

Dune: Part Two – Rated PG-13 for sequences of strong violence, some suggestive material and brief strong language.

Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom – Rated PG-13 for sci-fi violence and some language

Horizon: An American Saga – Rated R for violence, some nudity and sexuality.

Most of these ratings aren’t surprising, as the Aquaman and Dune sequels are big-budget tentpole films, and their predecessors were also PG-13. The Rebel Moon rating also isn’t much of a shock, as Zack Snyder has gone on record stating that he’d be releasing a family-friendly version of his two-film series first, followed by harder, R-rated Snyder cuts.

But, it also looks like Kevin Costner’s western epic, Horizon, is going for a hard-R, which is a refreshing change for a big-budget film nowadays. Perhaps spurred on by the success of the R-rated Oppenheimer at the box office, Costner’s Western epic seems aimed at adults and hopefully will be the career-capping masterpiece the star is betting on, with him having invested a significant chunk of money into the films to get them made.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hits theaters on December 20, while Rebel Moon is set for a December 22 release on Netflix. Dune: Part Two is due March 15, 2024, while Horizon, which is two parts, hits theaters June 28, 2024, and August 16, 2024.

Which of these highly anticipated movies are you most looking forward to? Let us know in the comments.
