Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, R-rating

This shouldn’t be a big surprise, but it will be a welcome one: Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F has officially been given an R-rating for “language throughout, violence and brief drug use.” Each of the previous three movies in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise was also released with an R-rating, so, as I said, no big surprise.

Nearly thirty years after the last movie’s release, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F will find Detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) back on the beat in Beverly Hills. The official synopsis reads: “After his daughter’s life is threatened, she (Taylour Paige) and Foley team up with a new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and old pals Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) to turn up the heat and uncover a conspiracy.” Mark Molloy directed the Beverly Hills Cop sequel from a screenplay by Will Beall and Tom Gormican & Kevin Etten.

Molloy recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the long-awaited sequel, explaining that he first watched Beverly Hills Cop when he was just 11 or 12 in Australia and that “It just blew me away.

In addition to Eddie Murphy, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F features the return of several original cast members, including Judge Reinhold as Lt. William “Billy” Rosewood, John Ashton as Sgt. John Taggart, Paul Reiser as Det. Jeffrey Friedman, and Bronson Pinchot as Serge. Getting the gang back together was a definite highlight for director Mark Molloy, and he knew he had to put Murphy, Reinhold, and Ashton together to improvise like the old days.

Eddie, John, and Judge sat in the car and they would just talk s—,” Molloy said. “And they told me that a lot of the first film is some of those moments when they were just allowed to sit there and talk to each other. I always had that image of those three guys on a stakeout in the car together, it was just imprinted in my brain. And then I remember sitting with the three of them in that car, and I actually happened to look around at the crew filming it. I just saw on everyone’s faces, like, Oh man, this is exactly where we want to be right now.

Molloy continued: “You’ve got one of the greatest comedians, if not in my eyes, the greatest comedian in the world. A huge part of my job is to create a space for improvisation to thrive. I always want to get what’s on the page, but when you have someone like Eddie Murphy, you want to let him be free. And as I look back on the film, some of the funniest moments in the film is when Eddie is improvising and the audience loves it.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F will premiere on Netflix on July 3rd.

At long last, Eddie Murphy is reprising his role as street-smart cop Axel Foley in the fourth instalment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, which is set to hit Netflix this summer. But, it isn’t easy being a middle aged action star. It’s been nearly thirty years since we last saw Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, and in a recent interview with People Magazine he admitted that the shoot was a “rough one”.“I did Axel Foley when I was in my 20s. I am not in my 20s anymore,” he said. At any rate, Murphy won’t be the only aged actor from the original to show up, with many of the classic Beverly Hills Cop cast members are set to join him in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Here’s everything we know about Beverly Hills Cop 4!

Who’s making it?

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley is written by Will Beall, who wrote Gangster Squad, Aquaman and worked on Zack Snyder’s Justice League. While his credits lean more heavily into action than comedy, Beall was also one of the scribes behind the TV show Castle, which has the right vibe for the franchise. The film is being directed by Mark Malloy, a famed commercial director who is making his directorial debut. He replaced Bad Boys For Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who left the project to direct the now-shelved Batgirl. Jerry Bruckheimer is again producing, with him not being involved in the third film.

Beverly Hills cop cast

What Beverly Hills Cop cast members are returning?

The Beverly Hills Cop cast originally included Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser and Ronny Cox, all of whom returned for Beverly Hills Cop 2. Of the four, only Judge Reinhold returned for the third film. Bronson Pinchot, who memorably played Serge, the museum gallery worker in the first movie, returned for the third film but sat out the second. It looks like this fourth film in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise is leaning heavily into nostalgia, with Judge Reinhold heading back to the Beverly Hills Police Department to reprise the role of Billy Rosewood, John Ashton returning as his partner, John Taggart, Paul Reiser as Axel’s Detroit partner, Jeffrey Friedman, and Bronson Pinchot returning as Serge. Ronny Cox, so far, seems to be sitting this one out. Despite being eighty-four, Cox is still active, with him having recently appeared in Aaron Sorkin’s Being the Ricardos. He also contributed a vocal performance to the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy.

Most of Murphy’s Beverly Hills Cop cast members have stayed busy since the last time they shared the screen with Axel Foley. Reinhold had a supporting role in the Santa Clause franchise and has also been seen in movies like Four Christmases and a Wedding, Bad Grandmas, and the underrated horror film The Hollow. He also reprised the role of Billy Rosewood in an unsuccessful Beverly Hills Cop TV series pilot that Barry Sonnenfeld directed back in 2013 with Brandon T. Jackson taking the lead as Axel’s son Aaron Foley.

Ashton’s recent credits include Death in Texas, American Christmas, My Little Baby, The Last Big Save, and Uncle John. Reiser has been seen on The Boys and multiple episodes of Stranger Things, and got to revive his 1990s sitcom Mad About You (co-starring Helen Hunt) for a new season in 2019. Pinchot’s recent notable credits include episodes of Ray Donovan, A Million Little Things, Lodge 49, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

The only core member from the first film, other than Cox, who’s not returning is Lisa Eilbacher as Axel’s friend Jenny Summers, but she never returned for any of the sequels either. Elibacher seems to have retired way back in 1995, as she has no screen credits since then.

Who else is in it?

Beverly Hills cop cast

The supporting cast is pretty stacked with an impressive array of names. Rising star Taylour Page plays Axel Foley’s daughter, who, in the trailers, is attacked by a hang of corrupt cops led by Kavin Bacon, who seems to be playing the villain. Seeking revenge and wanting to protect his daughter, after making his way to Beverly Hills, Axel runs afoul of the cop assigned to the case, played by Joseph-Gordon Levitt, although, as the trailer suggests, they eventually put aside their differences and team up to take out the bad guys. The heat is on!

Gordon-Levitt has earned a lot of respect and positive attention for his performances over the years, following his six season, 139 episode run on the sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun with films like Mysterious Skin, The Lookout, 500 Days of Summer, Hesher, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Premium Rush, Looper, Lincoln, Don Jon, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, The Walk, The Night Before, Snowden, The Trail of the Chicago 7, and yes, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Paige made her screen debut as a dancer in 2008’s High School Musical 3, and has since been seen in the likes of Touched, Ballers, Jean of the Joneses, Hit the Floor, White Boy Rick, Zola, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Kevin Bacon… well, who doesn’t know who he is? He’s the actor who has been so prolific and has been in so many high profile projects, they created the “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” game to prove any other actor can be linked to him in just six steps. Here’s a fun bit of trivia: in 1984, Bacon starred in the hit film Footloose, which was the seventh highest grossing film to be released that year. The film that sits at #1 on that list: the first Beverly Hills Cop.

Who’s doing the music?

Now, this is exciting. According to the IMDB and Wikipedia, none other than Harold Faltermeyer is back to do the score. This is terrific news, as the third film infamously dropped Faltermeyer’s synth to give us a fully orchestral version of Axel F, which fans of the series despised. Faltermeyer also recently contributed to the Top Gun: Maverick score (alongside Hans Zimmer and Lady Gaga).

Just how popular are the Beverly Hills Cop movies?

Beverly Hills cop 4 release date

The Beverly Hills Cop series totally blew up the box office in the eighties. Everyone loved Eddie Murphy’s streetwise Detroit cop, Axel Foley, who made his way to Beverly Hills to investigate his buddy’s murder. Along the way he form an unlikely friendship with some white cops who, initially, arrest him for being thrown out a window, but eventually become his allies and newfound best friends, to the extent that when one of them is shot in the second movie, Axel returns to seek vengeance. The first film made $234 million in North America alone, making it the top-grossing film of 1984 (it beat Ghostbusters). Taken for inflation, that’s about $677 million in 2023 dollars. The sequel, Beverly Hills Cop 2, was another hit for Paramount Pictures (who put out most of Eddie’s 80s movies), making over $153 million domestically. However, the third film was a notorious flop, only earning $42 million. Over the years, there have been numerous efforts made to get Eddie Murphy to reprise the character, with him even showing up in a CBS pilot that focused on the character’s son, who was played by Tropic Thunder’s Brandon T. Jackson, which has never seen the light of day.

What will Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F be rated?

While everyone assumed Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F would be R-rated, you never really can be sure with Eddie. While Murphy certainly hasn’t shied away from R-ratings in recent years, with his other two Netflix movies, You People and the great Dolemite is My Name both being hard-R, over on Prime Video, he’s focused on family fare. His sequel, Coming 2 America, nabbed a PG-13 despite the original being R, something fans weren’t thrilled about. It seems like Eddie listened to them, with a new promo spot for the movie showing him dropping enough F-bombs to guarantee this is going out with an R-rating.

When will it come out?

Word on the street is that this film is supposedly testing through the roof, so Netflix did the smart thing and gave it a big summer 2024 release. Indeed, the movie is set to officially bow on July 3rd, 2024 on the streamer.

The heat is back on this summer with the return of Eddie Murphy in his iconic role as Detroit police officer Axel Foley in the fourth installment, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. While Netflix has given us a sneak peek at the movie with a teaser trailer, we are now given a new look at previously unreleased footage from the Netflix film. Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff jokes about taking advice from Axel to apply in his own life as he transitioned from Los Angeles to Detroit. We are treated to some quick comedy bits that feature some R-rated language as well as some action clips of Eddie Murphy and co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a helicopter sequence.

Nearly thirty years after the release of the last movie, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F will find Detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) back on the beat in Beverly Hills. The official synopsis reads: “After his daughter’s life is threatened, she (Taylour Paige) and Foley team up with a new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and old pals Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) to turn up the heat and uncover a conspiracy.” The film also stars Paul Reiser, Bronson Pinchot, and Kevin Bacon. Mark Molloy directs the Beverly Hills Cop sequel from a screenplay by Will Beall and Tom Gormican & Kevin Etten.

Jerry Bruckheimer returns to the franchise after sitting out the third entry. The high profile producer has enjoyed his time with Murphy and has been seeing snippets of younger Eddie at his current age. Bruckheimer states, “Eddie’s such an incredible artist. He can do drama, he can do comedy – he can do anything. And he’s the same Axel Foley. He’s still on the streets. He’s still doing what he does. Obviously with age you get wiser. But he still has the twinkle in his eye.” Mark Molloy added, “Some of the funniest moments in Axel F are when Eddie’s doing improvising. For me, a big part of my job was to create the right environment [and] cast the right people around Eddie to allow him to do what he does best.“

Check out Everything We Know About Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, including the official release date on July 3.

new joker 2 images

With the new year upon us it is time we ask what movie (tentatively) releasing in 2024 is the one you are looking forward to seeing the most? The strikes took their toll on some of the movies that were meant for this year but we still have a lot to look forward to.

Whether you are wondering how they are going to make a musical sequel with Joker: Folie à Deux or how Deadpool will fit into the MCU or if Beetlejuice 2 and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F can be the rare decades later sequels that actually work?! There really is a lot to look forward to this year, and not just sequels either, we have some solid looking original films such as the re-teaming of Brad Pitt and George Clooney in the Jon Watts directed Wolfs along with the gangster film Alto Knights that brings back together Director Barry Levinson and star Robert DeNiro for their fourth film together. And if all goes according to plan, the first new film from Francis Ford Coppola in over 13 years as his decades in the making passion project Megalopolis is slated to release this year.

Last year you chose John Wick: Chapter 4 as your most anticipated movie with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One landing spots 2 and 3. 2023’s highest grossing film, Barbie, didn’t even crack the top 20, grabbing just 12 votes!

Netflix dropped the first teaser poster for the much-anticipated Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F yesterday, and now we’ve got our first look at Eddie Murphy back in action in the first teaser trailer for the Netflix movie.

Mark Molloy directed the Beverly Hills Cop sequel from a screenplay by Will Beall and Tom Gormican & Kevin Etten.

Eddie’s such an incredible artist,” said producer Jerry Bruckheimer. “He can do drama, he can do comedy – he can do anything. And he’s the same Axel Foley. He’s still on the streets. He’s still doing what he does. Obviously with age you get wiser. But he still has the twinkle in his eye.” Mark Molloy added, “Some of the funniest moments in Axel F are when Eddie’s doing improvising. For me, a big part of my job was to create the right environment [and] cast the right people around Eddie to allow him to do what he does best.

Given the bad taste that Beverly Hills Cop 3 left in the mouths of fans three decades ago, I can only hope that Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F will be a welcome return to form. Considering the amount of time which has passed since Eddie Murphy last suited up as Axel Foley, it’s no surprise that he can’t handle the action as well as he used to. “When I was on the set, we kept having that experience,” Murphy explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “There was a scene where they wanted me to run down these steps; it was outside, these cement steps. After I did it, the director said, ‘Can you come down faster with more of a sense of urgency?’ And I was like, ‘No, I can’t!’ I had to tell everybody, ‘Listen, I know I still look like Axel Foley but don’t ask me to do nothin’ you won’t ask Morgan Freeman to do.’

Eddie Murphy’s Candy Cane Lane is scoring high watch numbers for Prime Video. The new Christmas movie is something Murphy says hopes to be a new viewing tradition for audiences every holiday season. The review from our own Alex Maidy states that the movie is charming enough, saying, “Overall, Candy Cane Lane has its heart in the right place but tries to spread the story over too many subplots, which packs this overlong running time with too much to keep the attention of younger viewers and not enough consistency to engage with adults. This movie is far from tedious, but it could have been tighter and more focused on laughs.”

Murphy recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote his new movie. It was inevitable that he would be talking about his upcoming legacy sequel, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Kimmel complimented Murphy on aging really well, but inquired if he started to feel too old to perform as Axel in the new film. Murphy humorously recalled, “When I was on the set, we kept having that experience. There was a scene where they wanted me to run down these steps; it was outside, these cement steps. After I did it, the director said, ‘Can you come down faster with more of a sense of urgency?’ And I was like, ‘No, I can’t!’ I had to tell everybody, ‘Listen, I know I still look like Axel Foley but don’t ask me to do nothin’ you won’t ask Morgan Freeman to do.'”

Later in the interview, attention was turned back to Candy Cane Lane and Kimmel asked Murphy how he celebrates the holidays. Murphy, being a movie fan, spoke of the movies he traditionally watches for Christmas every year. Kimmel asked which ones were his favorites and Murphy said, “Growing up, we used to watch It’s a Wonderful Life every year. We used to watch Rudolph…We’d watch the Grinch every year. Now, I love to watch Jim Carrey’s Grinch every year. I watch that all the time. And I love Elf. I love Elf.”

Kimmel would later bring up Spotify, to which Murphy (who is self-professed about knowing very little about modern apps) asked him what it was. However, Murphy does partake in watching YouTube videos a lot and revealed what he’s been viewing recently, “Last week, I’ve been watching The Beatles’ Now and Then music video over and over and over and over.”

Check your tailpipe for bananas and prepare for a reunion with unlikely friends because Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley is getting the band back together! Judge Reinhold (Detective Billy Rosewood), John Ashton (Sgt. Taggart), Paul Reiser (Jeffrey), and Bronson Pinchot (Serge) will reunite with Eddie Murphy for the upcoming film, Netflix announced on Wednesday. While the plot remains more hidden than why they closed the log flume at Wonderworld, the idea of so many franchise alums returning is fantastic news. Previously announced cast members include Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Looper, Inception, Poker Face) and Taylour Paige (Zola, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, White Boy Rick).

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley falls under a one-time licensing deal between Netflix and Paramount to produce the project, starring Eddie Murphy. Filming is set to commence over 58 days, with a portion of the shoot in San Bernadino.

After an extensive search for a director, Mark Molloy will direct the Beverly Hills Cop sequel. Molloy’s previous work includes shooting a series of shorts and promos for Apple, Nissan, and the website domain registrar Go Daddy. Murphy will produce alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman for Jerry Bruckheimer Films. Will Beall, who wrote the screenplay for DC’s Aquaman, will pen the script.

Initially, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah were slated to direct Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley but were replaced by Molloy when the duo exited the film to shoot Batgirl. Imagine walking away from Beverly Hills Cop 4 only to have your movie, Batgirl, shelved by the studio that courted you away from a prime opportunity. What a shame. I mean that sincerely. They deserve better.

What do you think about Reinhold, Ashton, Reiser, and Pinchot reteaming with Murphy for another Axel Foley adventure? Will the group bring back that old-school on-screen magic? I wonder where all the characters are at this point in their respective careers. I can’t wait to find out.
